Brazil Edges Cameroon in Extra Time
Brazil overcame a shaky start to defeat Cameroon 3-1 in extra time. Naomi Eto gave Cameroon a stunning lead in their first-ever knockout round match, catching Brazil off guard. However, Priscila’s penalty conversion leveled the score, and Dudinha’s two goals in extra time sealed Brazil’s passage to the quarterfinals. Dudinha’s late heroics ensured Brazil reached their eighth U-20 Women’s World Cup quarterfinal.
Brazil coach Rosana praised her team’s attacking style and defensive solidity, saying, “Our identity is to be a very attacking team, but very well structured. Although we are a team that has many players in the opponent’s last line, we are very consistent in defense. It’s been something that we’ve been working on all year long.”
Spain Comes from Behind to Topple Canada
Defending champions Spain showed their mettle by coming from behind to defeat Canada 2-1. Florianne Jourde gave Canada the lead midway through the second half, but Spain responded quickly. Jone Amezaga equalized just 100 seconds later, and Silvia Lloris scored the winner in the 81st minute. Spain’s victory set up a quarterfinal clash with either Japan or Nigeria.
Spain coach Sonia Bermudez praised her team’s composure under pressure, saying, “We had to stay calm and get level, then afterwards we managed to push [Canada] back and take advantage of that.” Canada coach Cindy Tye praised her team’s performance, saying, “We [gave them a real fight] this is a group that believes, we were prepped and ready, unfortunately we switched off inside the box so it’s tough.”
