Munich, Germany – October 28, 2023
In a Bundesliga match that will be etched in football history, Bayern Munich cruised to an astonishing 8-0 victory over Darmstadt. This record-breaking encounter saw three first-half red cards, making it the first of its kind in Bundesliga history. The resounding victory propelled Bayern Munich to the summit of the German top-flight.
Thrilling But Chaotic Start
Bayern Munich was the clear favorite going into the match, but within five minutes, their position as the Bundesliga’s weekend banker appeared uncertain. A moment of individual brilliance by Marvin Mehlem, who dispossessed Joshua Kimmich, forced the Bayern midfielder into a foul, leading to a straight red card.
Undaunted by the early setback, Bayern continued to press, with Leroy Sané’s fierce shot from the edge of the area requiring a fingertip save from Marcel Schuhen to keep Darmstadt level.
Despite having a one-man advantage, Darmstadt struggled to halt Bayern’s momentum. Their reliance on Schuhen’s heroic goalkeeping was evident when he denied Harry Kane, but player numbers were soon evened out when Klaus Gjasula’s yellow card was upgraded to red after a foul on Konrad Laimer was deemed to have occurred outside the box.
The red cards kept coming, and Bayern gained a two-player advantage when Matej Maglica tripped Kane outside the box.
Bayern’s Dominance Unleashed
Bayern Munich appeared to capitalize on their numerical advantage when Sané found the back of the net. However, his joy was short-lived as the assistant referee’s flag ruled the goal offside. Nevertheless, Bayern did find a breakthrough early in the second half, with Harry Kane lashing home a goal from an inch-perfect pass by Noussair Mazraoui.
In a flurry reminiscent of London buses, Bayern quickly added a second goal through Sané, courtesy of Laimer’s excellent work. Sané continued to shine, securing his second goal of the game with a thunderous strike from the edge of the area.
The highlight of the match was Kane’s incredible long-range goal from within his own half, just moments before substitute Thomas Müller swept home Bayern’s sixth.
Bayern was in complete control, toying with Darmstadt, and Jamal Musiala added a seventh goal, a testament to their dominance. The goalscoring extravaganza was not over as Kane completed his hat-trick in the closing minutes, putting an exclamation mark on a historic afternoon of football in Munich.
